Vaccinations & Health Precautions
Tanzania does not have strict vaccination requirements for most travelers, but some vaccinations are strongly recommended for your protection. We advise consulting your doctor or travel health clinic well in advance of your trip.
Recommended vaccinations include:
Yellow Fever Requirements
If you are arriving in Tanzania or Zanzibar from a country with a risk of Yellow Fever transmission, or if you have transited through one of these countries for more than 12 hours, you will be required to present a valid Yellow Fever vaccination certificate upon entry.
However, travelers arriving directly from non-endemic countries, such as the United States, the United Kingdom, or most of Europe, do not need to show proof of vaccination.
Tanzania follows the World Health Organization (WHO) guidelines regarding Yellow Fever risk. Travelers from countries where Yellow Fever is present must provide vaccination proof. The current WHO list of endemic countries includes:
Africa: Angola, Benin, Burkina Faso, Burundi, Cameroon, Central African Republic, Chad, Congo, Côte d’Ivoire, Democratic Republic of Congo, Equatorial Guinea, Ethiopia, Gabon, Gambia, Ghana, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Kenya, Liberia, Mali, Mauritania, Niger, Nigeria, Rwanda, Senegal, Sierra Leone, Sudan, South Sudan, Togo, and Uganda.
South & Central America: Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, French Guiana, Guyana, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Suriname, Trinidad and Tobago, and Venezuela.
Your International Certificate of Vaccination or Prophylaxis (ICVP) serves as the official proof that you have received the Yellow Fever vaccine. The certificate is valid for life, though it is recommended to receive the vaccination at least 10 days before travel to ensure full protection. Some airlines may also require you to present this certificate before boarding.
If you are unable to provide a valid vaccination certificate when required, you may be vaccinated upon arrival, placed under quarantine, or in some cases denied entry. Certain airports and border posts have government-approved facilities where the vaccination can be administered on-site.
Malaria Prevention
Tanzania is a malaria zone, so preventive medication is highly recommended. Speak with your healthcare provider about the most suitable antimalarial prescription. We also suggest using mosquito repellent, wearing long sleeves in the evening, and sleeping under mosquito nets where provided.
