Tanzania is a year-round safari destination, but the best time to visit depends on the experience you’re looking for, whether it’s dramatic wildlife encounters, a Mount Kilimanjaro climb, a beach escape in Zanzibar, or fewer crowds and better rates.
January and February are among the most beautiful months to travel. The landscapes are lush and green, migratory birds are abundant, and the Great Migration calving season takes place in the southern plains of Serengeti National Park. Thousands of wildebeest calves are born during this time, attracting predators and creating exceptional wildlife viewing. With fewer vehicles in the parks and attractive seasonal rates, this period is ideal for photographers and wildlife enthusiasts.
March to May marks the long rainy season. Afternoon downpours are more frequent, particularly along the coast and in Zanzibar. Some remote camps may close temporarily, and wildlife disperses due to increased water availability. Climbing Mount Kilimanjaro is more challenging due to slippery trails and reduced visibility. However, this season offers excellent value, fewer safari vehicles, and dramatic skies, making it a good option for flexible, budget-conscious travellers.
June to October is the dry season and the most popular time for a Tanzania safari. Wildlife gathers around rivers and water sources, making sightings more predictable and rewarding. The famous river crossings of the Great Migration typically occur between July and September in northern Serengeti National Park. July and August are peak months, and areas such as the Ngorongoro Crater can be busy. Travelers seeking fewer crowds may prefer June or September, which still offer outstanding wildlife viewing. Nights can be cold during this period, especially in Ngorongoro and on early morning game drives, so warm layers are recommended.
For climbing Mount Kilimanjaro, the best months are September to October and January to February, when rainfall is lower and skies are clearer. Full moon summit climbs offer a spectacular experience, though these dates are popular and should be booked well in advance.
November and December bring the short rains, usually brief afternoon showers that refresh the landscape without significantly disrupting travel. Visitor numbers remain moderate, making this a pleasant shoulder season.
For marine life and beach holidays, November to March offers the best opportunity to encounter whale sharks near the Mafia Archipelago, while June to October provides ideal dry conditions for combining safari with relaxation in Zanzibar.
There is no single “best” time to visit Tanzania, only the best time for your travel goals. Whether you’re dreaming of witnessing the Great Migration, summiting Africa’s highest peak, or unwinding on white-sand beaches after a safari, the right timing makes all the difference.
