A hot air balloon safari in the Serengeti is one of Africa’s most unforgettable experiences. As the first light of dawn spreads across the plains, you gently rise above the savannah, leaving the world behind and entering a moment of pure wonder. What begins as nervous excitement quickly turns into awe as the vastness of the Serengeti unfolds beneath you.Drift silently over endless grasslands while herds of wildlife roam freely below, elephants, giraffes, wildebeest, and predators moving through their natural habitat. From above, you witness the Serengeti from a completely different perspective, with sweeping panoramic views and intimate wildlife moments that are impossible to experience from the ground.
The flight is smooth and serene, guided by the soft morning breeze. As the sun climbs higher, the savannah comes alive, revealing one of nature’s greatest spectacles — a timeless dance between predator and prey played out across the plains. Your day begins early, with collection from your lodge or camp in the Serengeti, followed by a transfer to the designated launch site in the area where your balloon safari is scheduled to operate. On arrival, you will meet your experienced pilot, receive a safety briefing, and watch as the balloon is gently inflated against the glow of the pre-dawn sky. As the sun rises, the balloon lifts smoothly into the air, offering breathtaking views of the vast Serengeti landscape — endless plains, winding rivers, rocky kopjes, and changing light that reveals the park’s remarkable scale and beauty. Floating silently above the savannah provides a unique perspective of this iconic ecosystem, while spotting wildlife from above is an added and rewarding bonus, offering unforgettable moments as animals move naturally through their habitat below.
Your pilot skillfully controls the altitude of the balloon throughout the flight, at times gliding gently at treetop level or lower, offering a unique perspective and excellent photographic opportunities of the landscape below. At other moments, the balloon ascends to 1,000 feet (300 meters) or higher, revealing the sheer scale and breathtaking panorama of the Serengeti plains. Periodically, the pilot adds bursts of heat using the powerful burners, and between these moments, there is a profound silence broken only by the natural sounds of the wilderness beneath you.
The flight lasts approximately one hour, depending on weather conditions. Upon landing, the experience is traditionally celebrated with a sparkling wine toast, followed by a beautifully prepared bush breakfast served in classic Out of Africa style. After breakfast, guests receive a Serengeti Balloon Safari Certificate before being transferred back to their lodge or continuing with their planned safari activities, often enjoying game viewing along the way.
