The Northern Circuit is home to the classic African safari experience—from the endless short-grass plains of Serengeti National Park to the baobab-dotted landscapes of Tarangire National Park and the unique ecosystem of Ngorongoro Crater. Serengeti National Park is one of the most celebrated wildlife destinations in the world, frequently featured in books, documentaries, and photography showcasing Africa’s incredible wildlife. It is home to the world-famous Great Wildebeest Migration, where millions of wildebeest and other animals move across the vast plains in search of fresh grazing—arguably the greatest wildlife spectacle on earth. The Serengeti truly represents the iconic image of East Africa and Tanzania’s rich natural heritage.
The Ngorongoro Conservation Area covers approximately 8,292 square kilometers and encompasses the spectacular volcanic highlands surrounding the iconic Ngorongoro Crater. The area includes significant landmarks such as the crater itself (approximately 260 square kilometers), the world-famous Olduvai Gorge, and Mount Oldonyo Lengai—Africa’s only active volcano.Renowned for its breathtaking landscapes, abundant wildlife, and extraordinary archaeological importance, the Ngorongoro Conservation Area is one of Africa’s most remarkable destinations. Adding to its uniqueness is the presence of the Maasai people, a proud pastoral community that has coexisted harmoniously with wildlife for generations.
Tarangire National Park is one of the lesser-visited parks on Tanzania’s Northern Circuit, allowing it to retain a strong sense of untouched wilderness, particularly in its remote southern regions. Covering approximately 2,850 square kilometers, the park is characterized by vast grasslands, seasonal swamps, and fertile floodplains nourished by the life-giving Tarangire River.This river attracts large concentrations of wildlife, especially during the dry season. The landscape is dominated by towering ancient baobab trees—many hundreds of years old—particularly in the northern areas. Beyond this, the scenery transitions into acacia woodlands, open bushland, and picturesque groves of doum palms, creating a diverse and visually striking environment.
Lake Manyara National Park covers approximately 330 square kilometers, making it relatively small by African standards. However, what it lacks in size, it more than makes up for in natural beauty and ecological diversity. Nearly two-thirds of the park is covered by Lake Manyara, providing a vital habitat for a wide variety of wildlife and birdlife.Nestled beneath the dramatic western escarpment of the Great Rift Valley, the park stretches as a narrow strip between the towering escarpment and the lake’s shoreline. This unique setting supports a rich range of habitats, from groundwater forests and open grasslands to swamps and acacia woodlands, making it one of Tanzania’s most scenic and rewarding parks to explore.
Arusha National Park is easily accessible via a scenic 60-minute drive from Moshi or Arusha. Despite its proximity to urban centers, it remains one of the less-visited national parks in Tanzania, offering a peaceful and off-the-beaten-track experience.Covering approximately 137 square kilometers, the park features three main attractions—Mount Meru, the Momella Lakes, and Ngurdoto Crater—all of which can be explored within a single day. This makes it an excellent choice for short safaris, day trips, and walking or canoeing experiences.
